Summary

Cannabis is the most common illegal drug in the UK. It comes from the cannabis plant and there are many different variations of the drug, which produce different effects.

The cannabis plant can also be used to create rope and fibres (called hemp) and is known for its medicinal and psychoactive properties in many cultures.

Cannabis is a natural substance and not related to the synthetic cannabinoid, known as ‘Spice’.

How it is taken

People take cannabis in many different ways. It can be smoked in a joint, bong or pipe, vaporised or eaten in things like cakes, biscuits and sweets.

In oil form cannabis can be taken orally under the tongue or in a capsule. Sometimes people heat the oils and inhale the smoke. This is called ‘dabbing’.

Cannabis oil comes in different concentrations. Oils with very high levels of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) are much stronger than herbal cannabis.

Effects

Cannabis can have different effects in different people. It makes many people feel happy, calm or giggly and others can feel more introspective. Some feel more connected with the people and things around them, and can also feel sexual arousal.

However, negative side effects can include anxiety, paranoia, sleepiness and withdrawal.

When too much cannabis is taken with alcohol it can cause dizziness and sickness. It can also affect blood pressure and blood sugar levels and increase heart rate.

Smoking or vaping cannabis will produce an effect in a few minutes, whereas if you’re eating it, it will take longer to feel the effects.
